Here is a brief background: When I was seven, my family moved to France. I lived in Paris until I was 20 and had finished my Fine Arts studies. I continued my studies becoming an architect in the United States.

Ever since, I have designed urban furniture and been involved in interior design. I have developed very different concepts like a floating house in Dubai, collections in silver, a new restaurant concept, airport counters and all kinds of product designs and architecture, which you can see at www.daifukudesigns.com.

I became a designer because…
I studied architecture, and despite working extensivley with architecture on a professional level, I like to design all kinds of things, from the wallpaper in a house to the pencil you use to draw.

My bulb lights up when…
I have free time - a small space in an otherwise very stressful professional life. Very often, these moments are found in waiting rooms or on a plane or train…

The feature I desire in a lamp is…
There are different features for each concept. A lamp can be very beautiful, because the simplicity of its design is more focused towards the way it gives light, or it can be a very present feature, quite sculptural.

I like this stage…
I like starting up a new project. I can’t think of a phase, because starting up the project is the most creative part itself. To me, creativity shows up in an absolute mental silence.

Half of the issue is not the lamp itself, but using it properly. When they are well-used, I expect my designs to yield positive energy, such as tranquillity, a feeling of well-being, harmony, or clarity.

The names I give my creations come from…
Trying to relate the name with the piece’s shape: for example, I named a lamp Snaik (from snake) because of its flexible shaft, or Litecube to an outdoor lamp that has the shape of an ice cube…

These special moments need a well-chosen lamp…
Actually, all of our moments should be special because life is really short. It is equally important to have adequate lighting to appreciate the features of the ones we love, to read, cook, or even to watch TV. Furthermore, the first impression you have when you enter a place and turn on the light should be special.

When a lamp has become old…
Oh, God! They NEVER turn old! I can see the neighbour’s flat from my office, and he bought a design piece I made almost 20 years ago. In the meantime, he has had a child, has divorced, and changed flats. His ex sold the flat to another couple, but the lamp is still there, still working.
