The Man Behind CaterQuotes receives FEDA President’s Dealer-based Distribution Award 2011 – This is his story.

auto The life of our CEO Kent Motes, mirrors that of many of the dealers he serves. Twenty something years ago and after years of collecting solid business experience outside of the industry, the idea that became reality is now an industry fixture in the USA with online servers hosting $1 billion in quotes per week, the vast majority being created by dealers.

But it didn't start this way. “Like so many of my peers in the industry, I wanted to be a second-generation success,” I started my career in 1983 as the head of contract development with E. H. Thompson, enjoying being with friends at the EDI buying group many of whom I had known ever since I was a kid. I wanted to have a seat every year at the FEDA convention. It was the only permanent job I wanted.” If I'd been more successful at it, maybe I would have had a seat with FEDA members at the convention instead of a folding table in the lobby. But the truth of the matter is I was more of a “numbers guy” than a designer or a president of a dealership.

“I soon found was that I was not like my father Henry, I was committed to the job, but it was hard learning curve, sometimes tedious, very exacting, but extremely complex. Offices filled with shelves of catalogues and spreadsheets, every desk had a monthly trade magazine called the ‘Info Expediter which listed the valid dates of manufacturer price lists. The only way at the time to keep accurate pricing and the same business style that had been in existence for 30 years, but I wondered if that same style would sustain the business for my 30 years.”

I began the process of transforming my father’s business model by moving locations, upgrading operations, investing in an IBM accounting system, cell phones for salespeople and a ‘new phone device called a fax machine, plus AutoCAD for the design department.
“I could see that most FEDA dealers were becoming innovators changing their business practices and I was following their lead.”

Unlike most of my colleagues, I continued to gravitate toward the technical side of the business. After researching AutoCAD for the contract department in 1987 I partnered with a colleague to develop a CAD program called AutoMATE. A year later, he became enamoured with the database management system dBASE and learned enough programming to figure out how to build a program with a database and spreadsheet for maintaining prices and quoting jobs. He had always despised the racks of price lists and spreadsheets.

“I befriended some database programmers and we decided to develop a DOS pricing program that could be use in my dealership. I was having great fun and began to think that other dealers would like it, too.” Two years later I sold my business and walked out of the front door of the business carrying a PC under one arm and a vision that would revolutionize the Catering Equipment supplies industry.

“I didn't have a formal business plan or any grandiose ideas about being in the software business”. “I just had an idea that I loved and I needed software and content to develop it. I wanted to build a database from the big rack of price lists that lived on the credenza of my office. I knew I could design a lotus-like spreadsheet for creating quotes. I wanted it to be low-cost, low-risk, pain-free and accessible to everyone - not an expensive niche product. I wanted AutoQuotes to have a zero learning curve with instant productivity, since I knew that 70 percent of our new users would never have used a computer before.

“It was a simple plan that became a business plan. By the mid-nineties AutoQuotes began to be invited into the buying groups. Manufacturers began to feel the positive effects of improved demand and more and more dealers simply announced to manufacturers that being in the programme would determine which products were quoted.”

Of course, in between there were lean years, “We were too small to matter, too innovative to have a chance, but that was then and this is now. I am delighted that an ever increasing number of companies within the UK catering equipment supplies industry, see CaterQuotes as a valuable aid to winning and doing business. Looking to the future we will continue to develop our programme and additional software options to provide the tools required to operate effectively in an ever changing market.

Thank you for using CaterQuotes.
